Data is the Bedrock of Analytics. But it is Never Neutral.

Everything we build in analytics and AI rests on data.

I think we underestimate how much of what we call “insight” is simply a reflection of how that data was created, shaped, and interpreted over time.

Data is not a clean starting point. It carries history.

It reflects how the enterprise has operated. What it chose to measure. What it ignored. Where definitions were clear and where they were loosely agreed upon. It captures decisions, but also the inconsistencies behind them.

So, when we build analytics on top of it, we are not starting fresh.

We are building on top of accumulated assumptions.

That’s where bias enters.

Not as something obvious or intentional. But as something embedded.

A metric defined one way in one team and slightly differently in another.

Data captured more reliably in one part of the business than another.

Outcomes that reflect past decisions, not necessarily better ones.

AI doesn’t remove this. It scales it.

If the data carries bias, the model learns it.

If the data is incomplete, the insight will be too.

If the data reflects old ways of working, the system will quietly reinforce them.

I believe this is where many enterprises get caught off guard.

They trust the output because it looks precise.

Because it is backed by data. Because it feels objective.

But precision is not the same as truth.

Good analytics is not just about building on data. It’s about understanding it.

Where did it come from?

What does it actually represent?

What is missing?

What assumptions are we inheriting without questioning?

This is not a technical exercise. It’s a human one.

In the end, people decide what data means.

People decide what to trust.

People decide how far to rely on it.

Data is the bedrock.

But it is not solid ground unless we are willing to examine what it’s made of.
